Reddit API pricing and who can get access.

It depends on who you are. Reddit's Data API is free only for eligible non-commercial use, at 100 queries per minute per OAuth client. Since its Responsible Builder Policy, every new app must request access and get approval first, and any commercial use needs a separate written agreement with Reddit at rates Reddit sets.

What Reddit's pages say

  • You must request access and get explicit approval before accessing any Reddit data through the API.
  • Free access is limited to 100 queries per minute per OAuth client id, averaged over ten minutes. Traffic without OAuth is blocked.
  • Commercial use, research beyond the rate limits, or anything not expressly allowed needs a separate agreement with Reddit. Reddit counts any use by or for a business as commercial.
  • Academic research goes through the Reddit for Researchers program.

When Reddit's API is the right tool

If you build a bot, a moderation tool or an app that posts and comments for users, Reddit's API is the only way, and the approval step is part of the job. Researchers should look at Reddit for Researchers.

If you need to read public threads about a product or a market without building an app, a data API is another route. Reddit's own rules about how its data may be used still apply to your use, so read the Data API Terms and the Responsible Builder Policy.

The playground runs any endpoint by hand: pick a platform and what you want from it, fill a short form named in plain words (or press Use sample input), see the free quote on the Run button, run it, then read the answer as a table or JSON and download it as CSV or JSON. The same call is written out as cURL, Python and Node while you type.

Why people pick API for Agents

  • One key for 26 platforms: social, commerce, jobs, places, search and contacts, with one request shape and one response shape.
  • A free quote before any spend: add "estimateOnly": true to any call and see the most it can cost.
  • Pay per record in US dollars. No subscription, nothing expires, top-ups from $5.
  • $0.10 free to try, no card. An AI agent can sign itself up in one request; a person claims it later.
  • Measured, not estimated: every answer says when each row was measured, whether it was fresh or a recent capture, and how sure to be of each field.
  • Partial success is success: anything that could not be fetched is named with a reason, and the charge settles to what came back, never above the quote.
  • Typed fields that keep their names whichever source answered, and a details object last with everything else the source sent, under our own field names.
  • Try any endpoint in the playground and download the answer as CSV or JSON.
